This month we are collaborating with local restaurants, speakers, students and volunteers to bring you our Lusophonian Dinner!
“Lusophonian” or “Lusophone” is someone who speaks the Portuguese language either as a native speaker, additional language, or a learner. As an adjective, it means "Portuguese-speaking". The word itself is derived from the name of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania, which covered most of modern-day Portugal. Lusophone countries include Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and the Chinese Special Administrative Region of Macau. The history of the Lusophone world is intrinsically linked with the history of the Portuguese Empire, although the Portuguese diaspora, the Brazilian diaspora and the Cape Verdean communities have also played a role in spreading the Portuguese language and Lusophone culture.
In addition to a fantastic meal and thoughtfully curated Cape Verdean musical accompaniment...We have TWO special guest speakers who will share their knowledge of Portuguese influences on our world and communities today - including right here in Rhode Island!
Don’t miss the chance to hear from Philip Graham & Alma Gottlieb, as they speak about their deep experiences with the music, food, and culture of Portugal, Cape Verde, and other places in the Portuguese-speaking world. Philip Graham is the author of seven books of fiction and non-fiction, including the memoir The Moon, Come to Earth: Dispatches from Lisbon (U of Chicago Press, 2009). He is a Professor Emeritus of Creative Writing, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and now a happy resident of Rhode Island. Dr. Alma Gottlieb is a cultural anthropologist who is currently completing a book about Cape Verdeans in Rhode Island and elsewhere. She is a visiting scholar in anthropology at Brown U. (after having retired from teaching for many years at the U. of Illinois).
