Position Open:  Executive Director – International House of Rhode Island

The Executive Director is the key management leader of International House of Rhode Island, whose mission is “to promote friendship, connection, learning, and global understanding by bringing people together from around the world for cross-cultural exchange.” This unique 56-year-old independent, membership, nonprofit organization, housed in an 1898 historic building designed by Edward I. Nickerson, offers hospitality, warmth, and critical social and educational interaction to international visitors to the State of Rhode Island. Described by one of our volunteer teachers as “an oasis of sanity and friendship,” the organization works closely with graduate students and post-docs, and their partners, from nearby Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design and local community members who wish to improve their English language skills and who seek opportunities for social interaction.  We are searching for an empathetic and compassionate Director particularly well-versed in fundraising opportunities, arts/humanities cultural programming, English for Speakers of Other Languages, volunteer management, and the ability to expand community outreach and marketing, along with strong commitment to our mission. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Board Governance: Works with board in order to fulfill the organization mission.

  • Responsible for leading International House in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.

  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.

  • Oversight of Committee structure and meetings; by-laws compliance; code of conduct compliance; regulatory compliance.

2) Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of International House to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization, working with Finance Committee.

  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support International House’s mission.

3) Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.

  • Responsible for creation and implementation of International House’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission.

  • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that International House can successfully fulfill its Mission into the future.

  • Responsible for the enhancement of International House’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations.

4) Organization Operations. Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.

  • Responsible for effective administration of International House’s operations.

  • Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff.

  • Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

Professional Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree

  • Transparent and high integrity leadership skills

  • Fund Raising Skills and Strategies, donor relations, critical to this organization’s continued success; with preferable knowledge of Rhode Island sources

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice and excellent intercultural communication skills

  • Nonprofit management experience

  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting

  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation

  • Ability to convey a vision of International Houses’ strategic future to staff, board, students, volunteers and donors

  • Strong demonstration of experience in community outreach

  • Preferably knowledge of Rhode Island demographics, interests and culture

  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers

  • Knowledge of social media and website management

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to interface and engage diverse volunteer and donor groups

  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff

  • Strong public speaking ability

  • Working knowledge of fulfilling house-related projects, leading building and grounds efforts/maintenance and preservation preferred

Actual Job Responsibilities:

  1. Planning and operation of annual budget, with strong fund-raising abilities in place.

  2. Establishing employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit.

  3. Serving as International House’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.

  4. Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations throughout the state and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance International House’s Mission.

  5. Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and to increase the overall visibility of the organization throughout the State.

  6. Supervise and collaborate with organization staff.

  7. Supervise room rentals (6 rooms available to grad students/faculty)

  8. Plan, implement and attend cross-cultural programs

  9. Write Newsletter for distribution to membership (3x per year)

  10. Strategic planning and implementation.

  11. Oversee organization Board and committee meetings.

  12. Prioritize needs of House Preservation, fund-raise for specific projects

  13. Oversee marketing and other communications efforts.

  14. Review and approve contracts for services.

  15. Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
